Hilo

Hilo is on the lush, tropical side of the Big Island… in other words, the rainy side. So while you won’t find as many white sand beaches and sunny days, you will find lower-priced hotel rooms and easy access to the volcano park as well as a variety of waterfalls and tropical gardens. Hilo is the largest city on the Big Island, with a population a little over 40,000 people, but it definitely remains the “old Hawaii” atmosphere. Hilo is home to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, ʻImiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaiʻi, as well as the Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long celebration of ancient and modern hula which takes place annually after Easter.
